使い方

movement との違い
motion は少し客観的・科学的に「動き」を表すことが多く、movement は人や物の動きだけでなく、社会運動や活動の意味にも広く使われます。日常ではどちらも「動き」と訳せる場合があります。

会議での motion
会議での motion は「正式な提案・動議」です。casual な「提案」なら suggestion や idea のほうが自然です。

動詞の motion
motion は動詞では「身ぶりで合図する」という意味です。普通は motion to someone、motion for someone to do、motion toward a place の形で使います。
よくある間違い

誤: The car is on motion.
正: The car is in motion.
「動いている状態で」は in motion と言います。on motion とは言いません。

誤: He did a motion in the meeting.
正: He made a motion in the meeting.
会議で「動議を出す」は make a motion が自然です。do a motion は不自然です。

誤: She motioned me to the chair.
正: She motioned for me to sit in the chair.
「座るよう合図した」は motioned for me to sit のように、何をしてほしいかを動詞で示すと自然です。
