使い方

• pay attention to の形が基本

  「〜に注意を払う」は pay attention to ... と言います。to の後ろには名詞、代名詞、動名詞が来ます。例: pay attention to the speaker / pay attention to what she says.

• attention は多くの場合不可算名詞

  「注意」「注目」という意味では、通常 a や複数形を付けずに使います。例: attract attention「注目を集める」、need attention「対応が必要である」。

• attention と notice の違い

  attention は意識を向ける状態や集中を表し、notice は何かに気づく行為を表します。You need attention. は文脈により「配慮・手当てが必要」、You need to notice it. は「それに気づく必要がある」です。

よくある間違い

• 誤: Please pay attention me.

  正: Please pay attention to me.

  pay attention の後ろに対象を置くときは to が必要です。

• 誤: The news got many attentions.

  正: The news got a lot of attention.

  「注目」という意味の attention は通常不可算名詞なので、many attentions ではなく a lot of attention を使います。

• 誤: You should take attention to the signs.

  正: You should pay attention to the signs.

  日本語の「注意を払う」に近い自然な英語表現は pay attention to です。take attention は通常使いません。
