使い方

• pay attention to の形で使う

  「〜に注意を払う」は pay attention to ... と言います。to の後には名詞、代名詞、動名詞が来ます。例: pay attention to the road / pay attention to what he says.

• attention は多くの場合不可算名詞

  「注意」や「注目」の意味では、普通は an attention や many attentions とは言いません。a lot of attention, much attention, full attention のように使います。

• attention と care の違い

  attention は意識や関心を向けることが中心です。care は相手を大切にして世話をする気持ちや行動を強く表します。medical attention は「医療処置・診察」という決まった表現です。

よくある間違い

• 誤: Please pay attention on the instructions.

  正: Please pay attention to the instructions.

  pay attention の後は通常 to を使います。on ではなく pay attention to が自然です。

• 誤: This problem needs many attentions.

  正: This problem needs a lot of attention.

  attention は「注意・注目」の意味では普通は不可算名詞なので、many attentions ではなく a lot of attention と言います。

• 誤: He made attention to the details.

  正: He paid attention to the details.

  「注意を払う」は make attention ではなく pay attention と表現します。
