attend a class や attend a ceremony は、go to a class や go to a ceremony より少し正式で、学校・仕事・案内文などでよく使われます。

伸ばす、向ける
attend はラテン語の ad-「〜へ」と tendere「伸ばす、向ける」に由来し、元は「心や体をある方向へ向ける」というイメージがあります。そこから「出席する」「注意を向ける」の意味につながります。
接辞
attend は「〜へ向ける」という語源イメージから、場所へ向かって行く「出席する」や、意識を向ける「注意する」という意味になりました。
