attempt
試みる、やってみる 成功するか分からないこと、少し難しいことをしようとするという意味です。try より少し硬めで、努力や挑戦の感じがあります。
試み、挑戦 何かを達成しようとして行う行動や努力を表します。
企て、未遂 犯罪や危険な行為をしようとしたことを表す場合があります。特に attempt to do something や attempted murder のように使われます。

使い方

try より少し硬い語
attempt は try と近い意味ですが、try よりややフォーマルで、難しいこと・危険なこと・成功が不確かなことに挑む感じがあります。日常会話では try のほうが自然なことも多いです。

動詞は attempt to do が基本
動詞として使うときは attempt to open、attempt to solve のように、後ろに to 不定詞を置く形がよく使われます。attempt opening も文法的に可能な場合はありますが、学習者はまず attempt to do を覚えると安全です。

名詞は make an attempt がよく使われる
「試みる」は make an attempt to do something の形でもよく表します。例: They made an attempt to escape. は「彼らは逃げようと試みた」という意味です。
よくある間違い

正: He attempted to pass the exam.

Latin の ad-（〜へ）と temptare（試す、試みる）に由来し、古フランス語を経て英語に入りました。現在の attempt も「難しいことに向かって試す」という中心的な意味を保っています。
