使い方

  • 目的語を直接続ける

    withstand は他動詞なので、普通は withstand pressure のように目的語を直接置きます。日本語の「〜に耐える」に引っぱられて withstand against pressure とは言いません。

  • やや硬めの表現

    日常会話では stand, take, handle などが使われることもあります。withstand はニュース、説明文、ビジネス、技術的な文でよく使われます。

  • 物にも人にも使える

    A wall can withstand heat. のように物が力や熱に耐える場合にも、She withstood criticism. のように人が批判に耐える場合にも使えます。
