使い方

• hope と wish の違い

  hope は「実現する可能性があると思って願う」ときに使います。wish は「実現が難しい、または現実と違うことを願う」ときにもよく使います。例: I hope it stops raining. は雨が止む可能性がある感じ、I wish it would stop raining. は雨に困っていて強く願う感じです。

• hope to do と hope that

  自分が何かをしたい場合は hope to do を使えます。例: I hope to visit Canada. 相手や状況について願う場合は hope that 節を使います。例: I hope that you enjoy the trip.

• I hope so / I hope not

  会話で「そうだといいね」は I hope so.、「そうでないといいね」は I hope not. と言います。短く自然な返事としてよく使います。

よくある間違い

• 誤: I hope to you pass the exam.

  正: I hope you pass the exam.

  hope の後に「人 + 動詞」を続けるときは to を入れません。hope that you pass の that が省略された形です。

• 誤: I hope to pass you the exam.

  正: I hope you pass the exam.

  hope to do は主語自身がすることに使います。「あなたが合格することを願う」は hope you pass と言います。

• 誤: I hope I would see you tomorrow.

  正: I hope I can see you tomorrow.

  未来の実現可能な願いには would より can や will、または現在形を使うのが自然です。
