使い方

• 名詞では dispute over/about がよく使われる

  「〜をめぐる争い」は a dispute over ... や a dispute about ... と言います。特に権利・お金・土地・契約などでは over がよく使われます。

• 動詞 dispute は目的語を直接取ることが多い

  「主張に異議を唱える」は dispute a claim、「料金に異議を唱える」は dispute a charge のように、about を入れずに目的語を続けるのが自然です。

• argue より少し硬い語

  dispute は日常会話でも使えますが、ニュース・ビジネス・法律・契約など、少し正式な場面でよく使われます。

よくある間違い

• 誤: They had a dispute for the price.

  正: They had a dispute over the price.

  「〜をめぐる争い」は通常 dispute over ... または dispute about ... を使います。for はこの意味では不自然です。

• 誤: The customer disputed about the charge.

  正: The customer disputed the charge.

  動詞 dispute は「〜に異議を唱える」という意味で、目的語を直接取ることが多いです。about は不要です。

• 誤: We discussed a dispute calmly.

  正: We discussed the dispute calmly.

  特定のもめごとについて話している場合は the dispute が自然です。a dispute は「ある一つの争い」を初めて述べるときに使います。
