使い方

• stand と sit の違い

  stand は「立っている」、sit は「座っている」です。Please stand up. は「立ち上がってください」、Please sit down. は「座ってください」という意味です。

• can't stand は「我慢できない」

  can't stand は日常会話でとてもよく使われ、「大嫌い」「耐えられない」という強い意味になります。後ろには名詞や動名詞が来ます。例: I can't stand waiting.（待つのが我慢できない）

• stand for と stand by

  stand for は「〜を表す」「〜を支持する」、stand by は「そばにいる」「支える」という意味で使われます。例: UN stands for United Nations. / I will stand by you.

よくある間違い

• 誤: I can't stand to wait for a long time.

  正: I can't stand waiting for a long time.

  can't stand の後ろは動名詞（-ing）が自然です。不定詞が使われる場合もありますが、学習者はまず can't stand doing を覚えると安全です。
