使い方

• sit と sit down

  sit は「座る」という一般的な動詞です。sit down は「立っている状態から腰を下ろす」動作を強く表します。命令では Sit down, please. が自然です。

• sit と seat の違い

  sit は主に自分が座る動作を表す動詞です。seat は「人を座らせる」「座席」という意味で使われます。Please sit here. は自然ですが、Please seat here. とは言いません。

• 過去形は sat

  sit は不規則動詞で、過去形・過去分詞は sat です。sitted とは普通言いません。

よくある間違い

• 誤: Please seat here.

  正: Please sit here.

  「ここに座ってください」は sit を使います。seat は他動詞で「人を座らせる」という意味なので、この文では不自然です。

• 誤: I sitted on the chair.

  正: I sat on the chair.

  sit の過去形は sitted ではなく sat です。

• 誤: She sat the baby on the sofa.

  正: She sat the baby down on the sofa.

  「赤ちゃんを座らせた」と言うときは、sat the baby down のように down を入れると自然です。より普通には She put the baby on the sofa. とも言えます。
