使い方

• 「〜の見込み」は the prospect of ...

  prospect の後ろに動詞を置くときは、普通 the prospect of doing の形にします。例: the prospect of working overseas「海外で働く可能性」。

• prospect と possibility の違い

  possibility は広く「可能性」を表します。prospect は将来に実際起こりそうな見込みや、期待・不安を感じさせる将来の可能性に使われやすい語です。

• prospective は形容詞

  「見込みのある」「将来の」という形容詞は prospective です。prospect customer ではなく prospective customer「見込み客」と言います。

よくある間違い

• 誤: I am excited about the prospect to work abroad.

  正: I am excited about the prospect of working abroad.

  prospect の後ろで動作を表すときは、to不定詞より the prospect of doing が自然です。

• 誤: We met three prospect customers yesterday.

  正: We met three prospective customers yesterday.

  名詞の前で「見込みのある」と言う形容詞は prospective を使います。

• 誤: The prospects of the company is good.

  正: The prospects for the company are good.

  複数形 prospects が主語なので動詞は are。会社などについての見通しは prospects for ... が自然です。
