使い方

• 意味は文脈で大きく変わる

  pass は「通る」「渡す」「合格する」「可決する」「時間が過ぎる」など多くの意味があります。後ろに来る語で意味を判断します。例: pass the station は「駅を通り過ぎる」、pass the salt は「塩を渡す」、pass the exam は「試験に合格する」です。

• past と混同しない

  pass は主に動詞・名詞で、past は「過去」や「〜を過ぎて」という意味の名詞・形容詞・副詞・前置詞です。過去形は passed と書きます。

• 亡くなる」は pass away

  人が亡くなるという意味では、普通 pass だけでなく pass away を使います。直接的な die よりやわらかい表現です。

よくある間違い

• 誤: I past the exam.

  正: I passed the exam.

  「合格した」の動詞は passed です。past は pass の過去形ではありません。

• 誤: Please pass me to the pen.

  正: Please pass me the pen.

  「私にペンを渡して」は pass me the pen または pass the pen to me と言います。pass me to the pen は不自然です。

• 誤: She passed from the test.

  正: She passed the test.

  「試験に合格する」は pass the test/exam のように、前置詞なしで目的語を置きます。
