使い方

• outside は副詞なら前置詞なしで使う

  「外へ行く」は go outside と言い、go to outside とは言いません。outside だけで「外へ・外で」という副詞になります。

• outside + 名詞で「〜の外に」

  outside the room, outside the station のように、名詞を直接続けて「〜の外に」と言えます。outside of も特にアメリカ英語で使われますが、場所を表す場合は outside + 名詞 が簡潔で自然です。

• outdoor との違い

  outside は「外で・外の」という広い語です。outdoor は主に形容詞で、outdoor sports（屋外スポーツ）のように「屋外で行う」という意味を強く表します。

よくある間違い

• 誤: Let's go to outside.

  正: Let's go outside.

  outside が副詞のときは「外へ」という意味を含むので、to は不要です。

• 誤: I waited outside of the room for ten minutes.

  正: I waited outside the room for ten minutes.

  outside of も使われることがありますが、場所を表す基本表現では outside the room のほうがすっきりして自然です。

• 誤: The outside is cold today.

  正: It's cold outside today.

  天気や気温について「外は寒い」と言うときは、It is cold outside. が自然です。
