  知りたい、もっと見たい、聞きたいと思わせる様子を表します。笑えるという意味の「面白い」ではなく、心を引きつけるという意味です。

使い方

• funny との違い

  interesting は「興味を引く」という意味です。funny は主に「笑える、おかしい」という意味です。日本語の「面白い」は両方に訳せるので注意しましょう。

• interested との違い

  interesting は「人に興味を持たせるもの」を説明します。interested は「人が興味を持っている状態」を説明します。例: an interesting book「面白い本」／I am interested in the book.「私はその本に興味がある」

• very 以外の強め方

  very interesting も自然ですが、really interesting「本当に面白い」、quite interesting「かなり興味深い」、extremely interesting「非常に興味深い」などもよく使われます。

よくある間違い

• 誤: I am interesting in music.

  正: I am interested in music.

  人が何かに興味を持っている場合は interested in を使います。interesting は「興味を引く」という意味で、物や話などを説明します。

• 誤: The movie was very funny because the story was deep.

  正: The movie was very interesting because the story was deep.

  「話が深くて興味を引く」という意味なら interesting が自然です。funny は普通「笑える」という意味です。

• 誤: It was an interested lecture.

  正: It was an interesting lecture.

  講義そのものが人の興味を引くので interesting を使います。interested は人の気持ちに使います。
