使い方

• hint は直接の答えではない

  hint は「答えそのもの」ではなく、答えに近づくための小さな手がかりです。give someone a hint は「人にヒントを与える」という自然な表現です。

• a hint of ... は「ほんの少しの〜」

  a hint of garlic は「ニンニクの風味が少し」、a hint of sadness は「少し悲しそうな気配」という意味です。味・におい・感情・色などに使えます。

• 動詞では hint at ... がよく使われる

  hint at a problem は「問題をほのめかす、示唆する」という意味です。人に対して言う場合は hint to someone that ... の形も使えます。

よくある間違い

• 誤: Please teach me a hint.

  正: Please give me a hint.

  日本語の「ヒントを教えて」につられて teach を使いがちですが、英語では give someone a hint が自然です。

• 誤: He hinted me that he was leaving.

  正: He hinted to me that he was leaving.

  hint は通常、人を直接目的語にしません。hint to someone that ... または hint that ... を使います。

• 誤: The soup has hint of garlic.

  正: The soup has a hint of garlic.

  「少しの気配・風味」という意味では、ふつう a hint of ... の形にします。
