使い方

general と specific の違い
general は「全体的・大まか」、specific は「具体的・特定の」という意味です。例えば a general question は「大まかな質問」、a specific question は「具体的な質問」です。

in general は「一般的に」「たいてい」という意味のよく使う表現です。文頭にも文中にも置けます。

the general public
the general public は「一般の人々」「世間の人々」という定型表現です。単に general people とはあまり言いません。
よくある間違い

正: People in general like this movie.
「一般の人々」という意味では general people より people in general や the general public が自然です。

正: I have a general idea of this topic.
general は形容詞なので、know の目的語としてそのまま使えません。「大まかに知っている」は have a general idea of が自然です。

正: Please give me more specific information.
general information は「大まかな情報」なので、more specifically と組み合わせると意味がぶつかりやすいです。具体的な情報がほしい場合は specific information を使います。
