使い方

• side と beside の違い

  side は名詞で「側・側面」という意味です。人や物の「隣に」と言いたいときは beside や next to を使います。例: beside me「私の隣に」。

• side with の形で覚える

  動詞の side は多くの場合 side with someone/something の形で使い、「〜の味方をする、〜を支持する」という意味になります。

• on the side の意味

  on the side は文脈により「横に」「別に」「副業として」という意味になります。料理では sauce on the side で「ソースを別添えで」という意味です。

よくある間違い

• 誤: Please sit side me.

  正: Please sit beside me.

  side は前置詞ではないため、そのまま「〜の隣に」という意味では使えません。beside または next to を使います。

• 誤: He sided to his brother.

  正: He sided with his brother.

  「〜の味方をする」は side with someone と言います。to ではなく with を使います。

• 誤: There are many side to this problem.

  正: There are many sides to this problem.

  「多くの側面」は複数なので sides にします。
