使い方

• 名詞と動詞でアクセントが違う

  名詞の protest は前に強勢があり「プロウテスト」に近く、動詞の protest は後ろに強勢があり「プロテスト」に近い発音です。

• protest against と protest over

  protest against は「〜に反対して抗議する」、protest over は「〜の問題をめぐって抗議する」という意味でよく使われます。

• 日本語の「テスト」と混同しない

  protest は試験の test ではなく、「抗議」「抗議する」という意味です。

よくある間違い

• 誤: Many people joined a test against the new law.

  正: Many people joined a protest against the new law.

  日本語のカタカナに引きずられて test と書くと「試験」になります。「抗議」は protest です。

• 誤: They protested to the new policy.

  正: They protested against the new policy.

  「〜に反対して抗議する」は protest against が自然です。protest to は抗議する相手を示す場合に使うことがあります。

• 誤: She made protest loudly.

  正: She protested loudly.

  動詞として使うなら protest だけで「抗議する」という意味になります。名詞で言うなら made a protest のように冠詞 a が必要です。
