使い方

• proportion と percentage の違い

  proportion は『全体に対する部分の割合』を広く表します。percentage はその割合を 100 分率、つまり 30% のような形で表すときに使います。

• proportion と ratio の違い

  ratio は A:B のように2つ以上の数量を比べる『比』を表すことが多いです。proportion は『全体の中の割合』や『釣り合い』まで含む、少し広い言葉です。

• a proportion of の後の動詞

  A proportion of the students are... のように、of の後が複数名詞なら複数動詞が自然なことが多いです。特に人々の集団を表すときは are をよく使います。

よくある間違い

• 誤: The proportion of people is 30%.

  正: The percentage of people is 30%.

  30% のように具体的なパーセントを言う場合は percentage が自然です。proportion も文脈によって使えますが、学習者には percentage の方が分かりやすく自然です。

• 誤: The proportion between women in the company is increasing.

  正: The proportion of women in the company is increasing.

  『全体の中で女性が占める割合』は proportion of women と言います。between は2つのものを直接比べるときに使います。

• 誤: The head is too big in proportion with the body.

  正: The head is too big in proportion to the body.

  『〜と比べて、〜に対して』という意味では in proportion to が自然な表現です。
