• よく使う形: proportional to

  「A is proportional to B」で「AはBに比例する」という意味になります。前置詞は多くの場合 to を使います。

• proportional と proportionate

  proportional は数学・データ・割合の関係でよく使われます。proportionate も「つり合った」という意味ですが、罰・反応・大きさなどが適切な程度かを言うときによく使われます。

よくある間違い

• 誤: The cost is proportional with the distance.

  正: The cost is proportional to the distance.

  「〜に比例する」は proportional to が自然です。with ではなく to を使います。

• 誤: The price is proportion to the weight.

  正: The price is proportional to the weight.

  proportion は名詞で、「比例した」と言うには形容詞 proportional を使います。
