使い方

• previous との違い

  preceding は「順序・時間・文章の流れで前にある」という意味で、previous より少しかたい響きがあります。日常会話では previous や last の方がよく使われることがあります。

• 名詞の前でよく使う

  preceding chapter（前の章）、preceding year（前年）、preceding paragraph（前の段落）のように、名詞の前に置いて使うことが多いです。

よくある間違い

• 誤: Please read preceding paragraph.

  正: Please read the preceding paragraph.

  paragraph のような数えられる単数名詞には、通常 the などの限定詞が必要です。

• 誤: The preceding year of 2024 was 2025.

  正: The preceding year was 2024.

  preceding year は「その前の年」という意味です。2025年の前の年は 2024年なので、文の組み立てに注意します。
