  形容詞

  今より前、または話題にしている時点より前にあったことを表します。人・出来事・仕事・経験などに使います。

  She worked at a bank in her previous job.

  順番や時間の流れの中で、今のもののすぐ前にあるものを指します。ページ、章、バージョン、日などによく使います。

  文章や会話の中で、すでに出てきた内容・説明・例などを指して使います。

使い方

• previous は名詞の前に置くことが多い

  previous job、previous page、previous year のように、名詞の前に置いて「前の〜」「以前の〜」という意味を作ります。

• previous と last の違い

  last は「この前の」「最後の」の両方の意味があります。previous は「今のもの・話題の時点より前のもの」という意味をよりはっきり表します。今を基準にした「先週」は last week が自然で、previous week は別の過去の時点を基準にする時によく使います。

• previous to は少し硬い表現

  previous to は「〜の前に」という意味ですが、日常会話では before のほうが自然です。例: Previous to the meeting, we sent the report. より Before the meeting, we sent the report. のほうが普通です。

よくある間違い

• 誤: This version is previous than that one.

  正: This version is earlier than that one.

  previous は普通 than と一緒に比較級のようには使いません。「〜より前の」は earlier than や older than を使います。

• 誤: I met her in the previous week.

  正: I met her last week.

  今を基準に「先週」と言う場合は last week が自然です。previous week は、別の過去の時点を基準にした「その前の週」によく使います。

• 誤: I have a previous experience in marketing.

  正: I have previous experience in marketing.

  仕事などの「経験」を一般的に言う experience は数えられない名詞として使うことが多いので、a を付けないのが自然です。
