使い方

• the following は「以下の」

  書類や試験で the following information, the following questions のように使うと、「この後に示す情報・質問」という意味になります。

• preposition の following は after に近い

  Following the meeting は after the meeting とほぼ同じ意味ですが、following の方がややフォーマルで、ニュース・ビジネス文書でよく使われます。

• a following は「支持者・ファン層」

  a large following, a loyal following のように使い、単なる人数ではなく、その人や活動を支持している人々を表します。

よくある間違い

• 誤: Please read the following informations.

  正: Please read the following information.

  information は通常不可算名詞なので、複数形 informations にはしません。

• 誤: Following to the meeting, we had lunch.

  正: Following the meeting, we had lunch.

  前置詞 following の後に to は不要です。直接名詞を続けます。

• 誤: I am following to my teacher.

  正: I am following my teacher.

  動詞 follow は他動詞として使うことが多く、「〜について行く」は follow someone で、to は入れません。
