obey
従う、言うことを聞く 人の命令・指示・お願いなどに従って、その通りに行動すること。親、先生、上司、警察官などの言うことに従う場面でよく使います。
規則・法律を守る rules、laws、orders、instructions などに従う、守るという意味です。日本語では「規則に従う」「法律を守る」と訳すと自然です。
命令どおりに動く 機械、動物、体の一部などが、指示やコントロールに従って動くという意味でも使います。

使い方

obey は目的語を直接続ける
obey は普通、前置詞 to を使わずに「obey someone」「obey the rules」の形で使います。「obey to the rules」は誤りです。

follow との違い
follow は「ついて行く」「手順に従う」など広く使えます。obey は命令・規則・権威に従う感じが強く、少し硬めです。

人に使うと上下関係を感じることがある
obey your boss や obey your parents は文法的に正しいですが、相手に強く従うニュアンスがあります。日常会話では follow your boss's instructions のように言うとやわらかい場合があります。
よくある間違い

obey は他動詞なので、通常 to を入れません。「規則に従う」は obey the rules と言います。

oboedire : 耳を傾ける、従う
obey は古フランス語を経て英語に入った語で、もとはラテン語の oboedire「耳を傾ける、従う」に由来します。「よく聞いて従う」というイメージがあります。
