使い方

• 怖い意味とは限らない

  mysterious は「不思議でよく分からない」という意味で、必ずしも怖いとは限りません。怖い雰囲気を強めたいときは eerie や spooky が使われます。

  a mysterious person は「謎めいた人」、a mysterious noise は「不思議な音」のように、人・物・出来事に広く使えます。

よくある間違い

• 誤: He is mystery.

  正: He is mysterious.

  mystery は名詞で「謎」です。人の性質を表すときは形容詞 mysterious を使います。

• 誤: I felt mysterious about the sound.

  正: I felt curious about the mysterious sound.

  自分が『不思議に思った』と言いたいとき、I felt mysterious とは普通言いません。音そのものが mysterious で、自分は curious や confused などになります。
