使い方

• direct の反対語

  indirect は direct「直接の」の反対で、「直接ではない」「何かを経由する」という意味です。道、原因、影響、言い方など幅広く使えます。

• 遠回しな表現にも使う

  人の言い方が indirect だと言うと、「はっきり言わない」「遠回しに言う」という意味になります。日本語の『婉曲的な』に近い場合もあります。

よくある間違い

• 誤: She gave an indirect answer to not hurt him.

  正: She gave an indirect answer so as not to hurt him.

  『傷つけないように』は自然な英語では so as not to や because she did not want to などで表すと分かりやすいです。

• 誤: This is an indirect way to saying no.

  正: This is an indirect way of saying no.

  way の後に動名詞を続ける場合は way of doing の形が自然です。
