使い方

• identical to が最も一般的

  「AはBと全く同じ」と言うときは A is identical to B が最も自然です。identical with も使えますが、やや硬い表現です。

• same より強い表現

  same は広く「同じ」という意味で使えますが、identical は「細部まで同じ」「違いがない」という強い意味になります。

• almost identical もよく使う

  identical は本来「完全に同じ」ですが、日常では almost identical「ほとんど同じ」、nearly identical「ほぼ同じ」のように少し弱めて使うこともあります。

よくある間違い

• 誤: My phone is identical with yours.

  正: My phone is identical to yours.

  identical with も文法的には可能ですが、日常英語では identical to がより自然です。

• 誤: They are very identical.

  正: They are almost identical.

  identical は「全く同じ」という強い意味なので very identical は不自然です。「ほとんど同じ」と言いたい場合は almost identical を使います。

• 誤: The two answers are same.

  正: The two answers are identical.

  same を形容詞として使う場合は通常 the same が必要です。ここでは identical を使うと「完全に一致している」という意味を自然に表せます。
