• 見分ける、特定する

  動詞

  人や物が何であるか、誰であるかを分かるようにすること。名前や種類を言える状態にする意味です。

使い方

• identify と find の違い

  find は「見つける」が中心ですが、identify は「それが何か・誰かを特定する」ことに重点があります。例えば find a key は「鍵を見つける」、identify the key は「どの鍵かを特定する」という違いです。

• identify as と identify with

  identify as ... は「自分を〜だと認識する・名乗る」、identify with ... は「〜に共感する・自分と重ねる」です。前置詞が変わると意味が変わります。

• フォーマルな場面でも使える語

  identify は日常会話でも使えますが、調査、ビジネス、医療、警察、研究など少し改まった場面で特によく使われます。

よくある間違い

• 誤: I identified the problem as soon.

  正: I identified the problem right away.

  as soon は単独では使えません。「すぐに」は right away や immediately が自然です。

• 誤: Please identity yourself.

  正: Please identify yourself.

  identity は名詞で「身元・正体・アイデンティティ」です。動詞「身元を明かす」は identify を使います。

• 誤: I identify with a teacher.

  正: I identify as a teacher.

  職業や立場として「自分は〜だと考える」は identify as を使います。identify with は「〜に共感する」という意味です。
