使い方

• explain A to B の形

  「BにAを説明する」は explain A to B と言います。日本語の感覚で explain me the answer としないように注意します。正しくは explain the answer to me です。

• what, why, how と相性がよい

  explain what happened（何が起きたか説明する）、explain why it matters（なぜ重要か説明する）、explain how to use it（使い方を説明する）のようによく使います。

• describe との違い

  describe は見た目や特徴を「描写する」、explain は理由や仕組みを「理解できるように説明する」という違いがあります。

よくある間違い

• 誤: Please explain me the problem.

  正: Please explain the problem to me.

  explain は通常、直接目的語に「説明する内容」を置き、人には to を使います。

• 誤: She explained me why she left early.

  正: She explained to me why she left early.

  why 節を説明する場合でも、「私に」は to me とします。

• 誤: He explained about the rule clearly.

  正: He explained the rule clearly.

  explain は目的語を直接取れるので、「そのルールを説明する」は explain the rule が自然です。about を入れると不自然になることが多いです。
