使い方

• 名詞と動詞でアクセントが違う

  名詞では前にアクセントが来て CON-trast のように発音し、動詞では後ろにアクセントが来て con-TRAST のように発音することが多いです。

• in contrast と by contrast

  どちらも「それに対して」「対照的に」という意味で使えます。in contrast to A は「Aとは対照的に」の形でよく使います。

• compare と contrast の違い

  compare は似ている点・違う点の両方を見ることがあります。contrast は特に「違い」に注目して比べる語です。

よくある間違い

• 誤: In contrast with last year, the price is cheap.

  正: In contrast to last year, the price is low.

  「価格が安い」は cheap でも通じますが、数値や価格については low が自然です。また in contrast to がよく使われます。

• 誤: Please contrast A and B about their similarities.

  正: Please compare A and B and discuss their similarities.

  contrast は主に違いを示す語です。似ている点を話すなら compare を使うほうが自然です。

• 誤: There are many contrasts between them in common.

  正: There are many differences between them.

  in common は「共通して」という意味なので、contrast や difference と一緒に使うと意味が矛盾しやすいです。
