使い方

• compare A with B / compare A to B

  「AとBを比較する」という意味では compare A with B がよく使われます。アメリカ英語では compare A to B も比較の意味でよく使われます。比喩として「AをBにたとえる」ときは compare A to B が自然です。

• compared with / compared to

  文頭で「〜と比べると」と言うときは Compared with ... または Compared to ... を使います。例: Compared with last year, sales are higher.（去年と比べると、売上は高いです。）

• comparison との違い

  compare は動詞で「比較する」。comparison は名詞で「比較」です。例: compare prices（価格を比較する）、make a comparison（比較する）。

よくある間違い

• 誤: We compared the price with other store.

  正: We compared the price with prices at other stores.

  compare は同じ種類のもの同士を比べます。「価格」と「店」を直接比べるのではなく、「価格」と「他の店の価格」を比べる形にします。

• 誤: Compared last year, sales increased.

  正: Compared with last year, sales increased.

  「去年と比べると」は Compared with last year または Compared to last year と言います。with/to が必要です。

• 誤: I compared about the two plans.

  正: I compared the two plans.

  compare は他動詞として目的語を直接取れるので、about は不要です。
