使い方

• 数えられない名詞として使うことが多い

  communication は「意思疎通」「連絡」という意味ではふつう不可算名詞です。a communication は「正式な通知・伝達文」という硬い意味では使えますが、日常会話の「1回の会話」には conversation や message を使う方が自然です。

• communicate との違い

  communication は名詞で「コミュニケーション、連絡」、communicate は動詞で「伝える、連絡する」です。need to の後には動詞 communicate を使います。

• communications は分野名にもなる

  複数形 communications は「通信システム」「通信業界」「広報・情報伝達の仕事」という意味で使われることがあります。

よくある間違い

• 誤: We need to communication more often.

  正: We need to communicate more often.

  need to の後には動詞が必要です。communication は名詞なので、動詞 communicate を使います。

• 誤: I had a communication with my boss yesterday.

  正: I talked with my boss yesterday.

  日常的な「上司と話した」は have a communication より talk with や have a conversation with が自然です。

  一般的な「コミュニケーション」は不可算名詞として単数扱いにするのが自然です。communications は通信分野や広報の意味で使うことがあります。
