使い方

• climb up と climb down

  climb は基本的に「登る」ですが、climb down と言うと「降りる」という意味になります。手足を使って慎重に降りる感じです。

• 数字にも使える

  climb は山や階段だけでなく、prices climb「価格が上がる」、temperatures climb「気温が上がる」、rankings climb「順位が上がる」のように、数値や地位の上昇にも使えます。

• b は発音しない

  climb の最後の b は発音しません。発音は /klaɪm/ で、「クライム」に近い音です。

よくある間違い

• 誤: I climbed to the mountain yesterday.

  正: I climbed the mountain yesterday.

  「山に登る」は climb the mountain と言うのが自然です。場所へ向かう意味の to は通常不要です。

• 誤: The price climbed up up.

  正: The price climbed sharply.

  climb 自体に「上がる」という意味があるので、up を重ねる必要はありません。大きく上がったことは sharply などで表せます。

• 誤: The baby climbed the bed.

  正: The baby climbed onto the bed.

  ベッドの上に乗る動きは climb onto the bed が自然です。climb the bed だけだと「ベッドそのものを登る」ように聞こえることがあります。
