上がる、登る 低い場所から高い場所へ移動すること。climb や go up より少し硬い表現です。
上昇する、立ち上る 煙、気球、飛行機、道などが上の方へ動いたり伸びたりすることを表します。
高い地位につく、昇る 権力、王位、重要な役職など、より高い立場に移ることを表します。

ascend 自体に「上へ行く」という意味があるため、up は多くの場合重複します。自然な英語では up を省くことが多いです。

使い方

少し硬い「上がる」
日常会話では go up や climb の方がよく使われます。ascend は文章、説明、ニュース、歴史の話などでよく使われる少しフォーマルな語です。

目的語を直接続けられる
ascend the stairs や ascend the mountain のように、場所を目的語として直接続けられます。ascend to the top のように to を使うこともありますが、ascend to the mountain とは普通言いません。

地位には ascend to を使いやすい
地位や権力に移る意味では ascend to power, ascend to the throne, ascend to a senior position のように to がよく使われます。ただし ascend the throne は to なしで定型的に使われます。
