使い方

• arrest と catch の違い

  catch は「捕まえる」という広い意味で、ボールを捕る、人を捕まえる、病気にかかるなどにも使えます。arrest は主に警察などが法律に基づいて「逮捕する」という意味です。

• be arrested の形が多い

  ニュースでは「誰が逮捕された」と言うことが多いため、was arrested や has been arrested のような受け身がよく使われます。

• 医学では cardiac arrest

  cardiac arrest は「心停止」という決まった表現です。heart attack「心臓発作」とは同じではありません。

よくある間違い

• 誤: The police arrested to him.

  正: The police arrested him.

  arrest は他動詞なので、目的語を直接置きます。通常 arrest to someone とは言いません。

• 誤: He was arrest yesterday.

  正: He was arrested yesterday.

  受け身では be動詞 + 過去分詞 arrested にします。

• 誤: The police made arrest.

  正: The police made an arrest.

  名詞 arrest を単数で使うときは、通常 an arrest のように冠詞が必要です。
