arrest

逮捕する警察などが、法律に違反した疑いのある人を捕まえて連れて行くこと。受け身の be arrested「逮捕される」でよく使います。

逮捕人が警察などに捕まえられること。make an arrest「逮捕する」、under arrest「逮捕されている」という形でよく使います。

止める、食い止める進行・発展・悪化などを止めるという、やや硬い表現です。犯罪以外にも使えます。

使い方

be arrested for の形

「〜の理由で逮捕される」は be arrested for 名詞・動名詞を使います。例: He was arrested for theft. / He was arrested for stealing a car.
arrest と catch の違い

catch は「捕まえる」という広い意味で、子どもをつかまえる、ボールを捕る、泥棒を捕まえるなどに使えます。arrest は法律上、警察などが正式に「逮捕する」場合に使います。
名詞では under arrest が重要

under arrest は「逮捕されている」という決まった表現です。冠詞を入れて under an arrest とは普通言いません。

よくある間違い

誤: The police arrested to him.

正: The police arrested him.

arrest は他動詞なので、目的語を直接続けます。to は不要です。
誤: He was arrested to stealing a car.

正: He was arrested for stealing a car.

逮捕の理由を言うときは for を使います。動詞を続ける場合は -ing 形にします。

英語の arrest は古フランス語 arester を通して入り、さらにラテン語系の arrestare「止める」にさかのぼります。現在の「逮捕する」は、人の自由な動きを法的に『止める』という意味から発展しました。
