使い方

• largeより強い表現

  vast は単なる「大きい」ではなく、「非常に広い」「膨大な」という強い意味があります。特に空間、量、知識、差などに使われます。

• 名詞の前でよく使う

  vast desert、vast amount、vast knowledge のように名詞の前に置く形がよく使われます。The area is vast. のように補語としても使えます。

よくある間違い

• 誤: There are vast people in the park.

  正: There are a lot of people in the park.

  vast は普通、人の数を直接修飾して vast people とは言いません。人数が多い場合は a lot of people や a large number of people が自然です。

• 誤: The room is very vast.

  正: The room is huge.

  vast は広大な土地や海、大規模な量などに合いやすい語です。普通の部屋には huge や very large のほうが自然です。
