    enormous は「とても大きい」という強い意味です。普通の大きさより少し大きいだけなら big や large のほうが自然です。

  • 程度や量にも使える

    物のサイズだけでなく、an enormous amount of money「莫大なお金」、enormous pressure「非常に大きなプレッシャー」のように抽象的なものにも使えます。

  • 名詞の前でも be 動詞の後でも使える

    an enormous building「巨大な建物」のように名詞の前に置けます。また、The building is enormous.「その建物は巨大だ」のようにも使えます。

よくある間違い

  • 誤: The room was very enormous.

    正: The room was enormous.

    enormous 自体がすでに強い意味なので、very enormous はやや不自然です。強調したい場合は absolutely enormous などが自然です。

  • 誤: We need enormous of water.

    正: We need an enormous amount of water.

    enormous は形容詞なので、of の前に直接置けません。「莫大な量の」は an enormous amount of と言います。

  • 誤: The price increased enormous last year.

    正: The price increased enormously last year.

    動詞 increased を説明するには形容詞 enormous ではなく、副詞 enormously を使います。
