使い方

• unique は基本的に「一つだけ」

  unique は本来「同じものがない」という意味なので、単なる「珍しい」より強い語です。日常会話では「とても独特な」という意味で very unique も聞かれますが、正式な文では truly unique や completely unique のほうが自然な場合があります。

• unique to の使い方

  「〜に特有の」と言いたいときは unique to ... を使います。例: a culture unique to Japan（日本に特有の文化）。

よくある間違い

• 誤: This tradition is unique in this village.

  正: This tradition is unique to this village.

  「〜に特有の」は unique to ... が自然です。unique in ... は文脈によって使えますが、場所だけに見られる特徴を言うときは unique to が基本です。

• 誤: This design is more unique than that one.

  正: This design is more distinctive than that one.

  unique は本来「唯一の」という絶対的な意味なので、比較級 more unique は正式な文では避けることがあります。「より特徴的な」と言いたいなら more distinctive が自然です。
