家具の table と desk の違い
table は食事、会議、作業など幅広く使う平らな家具です。desk は勉強や事務作業用の机で、引き出しが付いていることも多いです。日本語の「机」は desk に近い場合も table に近い場合もあります。

データを行と列で整理した「表」は table と言います。グラフは graph や chart なので、線や棒で視覚化したものとは区別します。

動詞 table は英米で意味が違う
イギリス英語では table a proposal は「提案を提出する」、アメリカ英語では table a proposal は「提案を棚上げする」という意味になりやすいです。国際的な会議では誤解を避けるため、submit や postpone など具体的な語を使うと安全です。

tabula : 板、書き板、一覧表
Latin の tabula が Old French の table を経て英語に入った語です。もともと「板」や「書くための板」を表し、そこから家具の「テーブル」や情報を整理した「表」という意味に広がりました。
