使い方

• 動詞では「勢いよく切る」

  slash は cut よりも強い語で、刃物などでざっくり長く切るイメージがあります。紙を少し切るような軽い動作には普通 cut を使います。

• 「削減する」の意味はニュースやビジネスでよく使う

  slash prices、slash costs、slash jobs のように、価格・費用・雇用などを大きく減らすときに使います。少し減らす場合には reduce のほうが自然です。

• 記号としての slash

  slash は記号「/」の名前です。backslash は「\」で、コンピューターでは別の記号なので注意が必要です。

よくある間違い

• 誤: Please write a backslash between the month and the day: 05\05.

  正: Please write a slash between the month and the day: 05/05.

  日付などで使う「/」は slash です。backslash は「\」を指します。

• 誤: The company slashed the cost a little.

  正: The company reduced the cost a little.

  slash は「大幅に削減する」という強い意味なので、a little とは合いにくいです。少し減らすなら reduce を使います。
