使い方

• flaw や weakness との違い

  shortcoming は「期待される水準に足りない点」という意味で、人・計画・制度などに幅広く使えます。flaw は「傷・欠陥」という感じがやや強く、weakness は「弱点」に近く、人の能力や性格にもよく使います。

• 複数形 shortcomings がよく使われる

  問題点が複数ある場合は shortcomings とします。例: We must recognize our shortcomings.（自分たちの欠点を認めなければならない。）

• やや丁寧で客観的な表現

  bad point よりも自然で大人っぽい表現です。ビジネス文書やレビューでもよく使われます。

よくある間違い

• 誤: He has a shortcoming of patience.

  正: His main shortcoming is a lack of patience.

  「〜が足りない」という内容は a lack of ... を使うと自然です。shortcoming of patience とはあまり言いません。

• 誤: The system has many shortcoming.

  正: The system has many shortcomings.

  many の後ろでは可算名詞の複数形を使うため、shortcomings にします。

• 誤: My shortcoming is short height.

  正: I am not very tall.

  shortcoming は普通、身長が低いという身体的特徴には使いません。能力・性格・計画などの「欠点」に使います。
