• 意味が多い単語

  scale は「測るための基準」から広がって、「尺度」「縮尺」「規模」「体重計」などを表します。文脈で意味を判断することが大切です。

• scale up と scale down

  scale up は事業や生産などを「拡大する」、scale down は「縮小する」という意味です。ビジネスやITでよく使われます。

• 体重計は単数・複数に注意

  アメリカ英語では a scale と言うことが多く、イギリス英語では scales と複数形で言うこともよくあります。

よくある間違い

• 誤: The company will scale up the number of employees to down.

  正: The company will scale down the number of employees.

  scale up は「拡大する」、scale down は「縮小する」です。up と down を同時に使う必要はありません。
