使い方

• 形のroundとcircularの違い

  roundは日常的で、円形にも球形にも使えます。circularは「円形の」という少し硬めの語で、主に平面の形に使います。

• round numberは「丸い数字」ではなく「概数・端数のない数」

  round numberは100や1,000のようにきりのよい数、または細かい端数を省いた大まかな数を意味します。

• roundとaround

  イギリス英語ではroundがaroundの意味でよく使われます。アメリカ英語ではaroundのほうが一般的ですが、turn roundなどの表現は広く理解されます。

よくある間違い

• 誤: The table is circle.

  正: The table is round.

  circleは名詞で「円」です。形を説明する形容詞にはroundを使います。

• 誤: Please make the number round up.

  正: Please round the number up.

  round upは句動詞なので、目的語the numberはroundとupの間に入れることができます。

• 誤: We had a round of meeting.

  正: We had a round of meetings.

  a round of meetingsは「一連の会議」という意味で、複数の会議を表すためmeetingsにします。
