近似の、ほぼ同じの 完全に同じではないが、かなり近い状態や値を表します。数学や科学でもよく使われます。
〜を概算する、見積もる 正確な数を出すのではなく、情報をもとにだいたいの数や量を考えることです。

形容詞と動詞で発音が違う
形容詞の approximate は最後が /mət/ のように短く発音され、動詞の approximate は最後が /meɪt/ になります。

exact ではないことを示す語
approximate は「正確ではないが、だいたい合っている」という意味です。正確な数字を強調したいときは exact や precise を使います。

approximate は形容詞または動詞で、approximately は副詞です。たとえば an approximate number は自然ですが、approximately number とは言いません。
