  数・量・時間・距離などが正確ではないが、そのくらいであることを表します。about や around より少しフォーマルです。

• about / around より少しフォーマル

  approximately は「約」を表す丁寧でややフォーマルな語です。日常会話では about や around、仕事のメール・報告書・説明文では approximately がよく使われます。

• 正確な数字には使わない

  approximately は「正確ではないが近い」という意味です。厳密な数値を示すときは exactly や precisely を使います。

よくある間違い

• 誤: The price is approximately exactly $50.

  正: The price is approximately $50.

  approximately と exactly は意味が反対です。「約」と言いたい場合は exactly を一緒に使いません。

• 誤: Approximately, 30 students joined the club.

  正: Approximately 30 students joined the club.

  数字を修飾する場合、approximately はふつう数字の直前に置きます。

• 誤: It takes approximately 30 minutes exactly.

  正: It takes approximately 30 minutes.

  approximately は「だいたい」の意味なので、文末の exactly と組み合わせると不自然です。
