使い方

• relation と relationship の違い

  relation は「物事の間の関係・関連」を少し客観的に表すことが多い語です。relationship は人間関係や継続的なつながりに特によく使われます。恋愛関係には relationship を使うのが普通です。

• 国や組織の関係は relations が多い

  国・会社・団体などの関係を言うときは、diplomatic relations「外交関係」、trade relations「貿易関係」のように複数形 relations がよく使われます。

• in relation to の意味

  in relation to は「〜に関して」「〜との関連で」「〜と比べて」という意味のやや丁寧な表現です。日常では about より少し硬い響きがあります。

よくある間違い

• 誤: I have a good relation with my boss.

  正: I have a good relationship with my boss.

  人との継続的な関係を自然に言う場合は relationship with がよく使われます。relation でも文法的に可能な場合はありますが、この文では relationship のほうが自然です。

• 誤: There is no relation with these two facts.

  正: There is no relation between these two facts.

  二つのものの関係を表すときは relation between A and B が自然です。no relation to A もよく使われます。

• 誤: In relation with your question, I will answer later.

  正: In relation to your question, I will answer later.

  「〜に関して」という決まった表現は in relation to です。in relation with は一般的ではありません。
