使い方

• quarrel with someone about/over something

  「誰かと何かについて口論する」は quarrel with someone about something または quarrel with someone over something と言います。over は「〜をめぐって」という感じでよく使われます。

• argument との違い

  argument は日常的な「口論、議論」に広く使えます。quarrel は感情的な言い争いの響きがあり、日常会話ではやや硬い、または少し古風に感じられることがあります。

• イギリス英語とアメリカ英語のつづり

  過去形・過去分詞は、アメリカ英語では quarreled、イギリス英語では quarrelled が一般的です。現在分詞もアメリカ英語では quarreling、イギリス英語では quarrelling がよく使われます。

よくある間違い

• 誤: He quarreled to his brother.

  正: He quarreled with his brother.

  「〜と口論する」は quarrel with someone と言います。to は使いません。
