• 嘆願する、必死に頼む

  動詞

  強い気持ちで、相手に何かをしてほしいと頼むこと。よく plead with someone「人に必死に頼む」、plead for something「〜を求めて訴える」の形で使います。

使い方

• plead with と plead for の違い

  plead with someone は「人に必死に頼む」、plead for something は「物・行動・助けなどを求めて訴える」という意味です。例: plead with the manager「マネージャーに必死に頼む」、plead for help「助けを求めて訴える」。

• 裁判では plead guilty / not guilty が定型表現

  法廷で plead guilty は「有罪を認める」、plead not guilty は「無罪を主張する」です。この場合の plead は「感情的に頼む」ではなく、正式に答弁するという意味です。

• 過去形は pleaded が最も安全

  plead の過去形・過去分詞は pleaded が標準的で、学習者にはこれが最も使いやすい形です。pled も特にアメリカ英語で見られますが、場面や地域差があります。

よくある間違い

• 誤: She pleaded him to stay.

  正: She pleaded with him to stay.

  「人に必死に頼む」は plead with someone to do の形が自然です。plead someone to do とは通常言いません。

• 誤: He pleaded guilty for theft.

  正: He pleaded guilty to theft.

  罪名を続けるときは plead guilty to + 罪名 を使います。for ではなく to が自然です。

  正: They pleaded with the mayor to change the rule.

  相手が人の場合は plead with someone が自然です。plead for は「助け・支援・変更など」を求める対象に使います。
