使い方

• mountain と hill の違い

  mountain は「山」で、hill は「丘」です。mountain のほうが高く大きく、登るのが大変な印象があります。ただし、どの高さから mountain と呼ぶかは国や地域で違うことがあります。

• 比喩の a mountain of

  a mountain of problems、a mountain of paperwork のように使うと、「山ほどの〜」「大量の〜」という意味になります。少し強調した言い方です。

よくある間違い

• 誤: I climbed up the mountain top.

  正: I climbed to the top of the mountain.

  「山の頂上まで登った」は climb to the top of the mountain が自然です。mountain top は名詞として使えますが、この文では to the top of the mountain のほうが分かりやすいです。

• 誤: There are many mountains of paper on my desk.

  正: There is a mountain of paper on my desk.

  比喩で「山ほどの紙」と言うときは、ふつう a mountain of paper の形で使います。
