真ん中、中央 場所・集団・状況のちょうど中の部分を表すやや文語的な語。多くは「in the midst of ...（〜の真ん中で）」の形で使います。
〜の最中に、〜している間に 何かが進行しているちょうどその時を表します。特に問題・変化・作業・出来事などの途中で使われます。
〜の中に、〜の間に 人々や物の集まりの中にいる、または存在していることを表します。「in our midst」は「私たちの中に」という少し改まった表現です。

midst は単独で使うよりも、in the midst of ... の形が圧倒的に多いです。「〜の真ん中で」「〜の最中に」の両方の意味になります。

日常会話では middle がよく使われます。midst は文章、ニュース、スピーチ、物語などでやや改まった響きがあります。

amid と近いが形が違う
amid は前置詞で、直後に名詞を置けます。midst は名詞なので、普通は in the midst of のような形で使います。
