• 普通は数えられない名詞

  garbage は通常 uncountable noun なので、many garbages とは言いません。量を表すときは a bag of garbage、a pile of garbage、a piece of garbage などを使います。

• 比喩では強い否定の感じ

  意見や情報を garbage と言うと『くだらない』『でたらめだ』という強い批判になります。人に直接使うと失礼になることがあります。

よくある間違い

• 誤: There are many garbages in the park.

  正: There is a lot of garbage in the park.

  garbage は普通、数えられない名詞なので many garbages ではなく a lot of garbage と言います。

• 誤: I threw the garbage to the bin.

  正: I threw the garbage in the bin.

  ごみ箱の中に入れる場合は into または in を使います。to は方向を表すだけで、中に入った感じが弱いです。

• 誤: Please clean the garbage.

  正: Please take out the garbage.

  家庭のごみを外へ出す場合は take out the garbage が自然です。clean は『掃除する』で、ごみそのものには通常使いません。
